Endesa and Iberdrola request postponement of nuclear phase-out
Endesa and Iberdrola have sent a letter to the Minister for Ecological Transition requesting a postponement of the planned shutdown of Spanish nuclear power plants. Spain has five nuclear power plants operated by Endesa and Iberdrola, in which Naturgy and EDP also have stakes. These plants supply 20% of the electricity consumed in Spain. The plants are scheduled to be shut down in 2027. Endesa and Iberdrola are using the recent blackout to spark debate. The minister has said she is open to discussion. Spanish electricity companies also want to see a reduction in the tax burden on nuclear power plants, which has risen by 70% since 2019. A bill allowing nuclear power plant operators to continue operating their plants could be tabled in Parliament shortly.
