584 billion euros to be invested in electricity networks by 2030
The European Commission estimates that €584 billion will need to be invested in electricity transmission and distribution networks between now and 2030. Most renewable electricity production capacity is connected to distribution networks. However, the size of these networks varies greatly from country to country: in Europe, there are 2,500 electricity distribution networks. This is a sensitive issue from a political point of view, because most of the investment will be financed by electricity consumers. Yet network costs account for a significant proportion of the electricity bill of individual customers.
