Worldwide electricity consumption set to rise by 3.3% in 2025
The International Energy Agency forecasts growth in electricity consumption worldwide of 3.3% in 2025 and 3.7% in 2026. Over the period 2015-2023, the average growth in electricity consumption worldwide was 2.6%. China accounts for 50% of the increase in electricity consumption, with an expected growth rate of 5% in 2025 and 5.7% in 2026, driven by the electrification of uses (electric vehicles, heat pumps). In Europe, electricity consumption is expected to grow by just 1.5% in 2025 and 2026. The increase in consumption is accompanied by significant growth in renewable energies. Wind and solar power will account for 90% of the increase in consumption worldwide by 2025. Combined production from wind and solar should reach 5,000 TWh in 2025 and 6,000 TWh in 2026, compared with 4,000 TWh in 2024.
