Wind and solar power are making significant progress in Europe
Wind and solar power accounted for 30% of electricity production in the European Union in 2025, according to the think tank Ember, compared with 29% for gas and coal. The share of nuclear power remained stable at 23%, while that of hydroelectric power fell to 12%. Solar power generation increased by 20% to 369 TWh. Wind power generation declined, affected, like hydroelectric power, by unfavourable weather conditions. Coal-fired power stations now account for only 10% of European production, with 257 TWh, with production mainly concentrated in Germany and Poland. Gas-fired power stations produced 466 TWh, up 8% compared to 2024, with gas increasingly replacing hydro and wind power.
