Westinghouse wants to develop nuclear micro-reactors. This type of reactor, with a unit power of less than 20 MW, could power certain remote sites (oil platforms, data centres, port infrastructures) and replace generators or certain batteries. According to Westinghouse, the production of micro-reactors in large numbers will make it possible to reduce their cost and produce competitive electricity to power isolated sites. Regulators will have to adapt safety rules, designed for large reactors, to the case of micro-reactors without lowering the level of safety of the installations.
