Two attacks on electrical substations carried out on the same day in Germany

German authorities said on Wednesday 2 September that they were investigating two attacks on electrical substations that took place on Tuesday 1 September. Police opened an inquiry into the first incident, in which improvised explosive devices were fired on Tuesday morning at a transformer substation used to carry power from a 3,000 MW lignite-fired plant at Jänschwalde, in eastern Germany near the Polish border.

In Bergheim, a town in the west of the country more than 700 kilometres from Jänschwalde, unidentified individuals deliberately caused a short circuit at a substation operated by grid operator Amprion by targeting overhead cables.

Neither attack has been claimed. The incidents did not cause any supply interruption, although operations at neighbouring power plants were disrupted.
