Tony Blair calls for an overhaul of the strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair is calling for an overhaul of the strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the former Prime Minister, while there is a very broad consensus on the human origins of climate change and the need to act against it, the policies being implemented are ineffective and even counterproductive. Tony Blair believes that it makes no sense to ask consumers in developed countries, who ultimately bear the cost of the policies implemented to combat climate change, to make sacrifices, when the bulk of future emissions will come from emerging or developing countries. Although an international consensus was reached when the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015, the health crisis and the energy crisis have shattered this consensus, with public opinion in emerging countries no longer accepting the idea of reducing their emissions if this means slowing down their own economic development. Tony Blair believes that targets aimed at forcing fossil fuels out of the game or focusing on reducing energy consumption are unrealistic and risk, at worst, alienating public opinion. The former Prime Minister proposes to support technological innovation so as to have real options for reducing emissions. Among the technologies to be supported, the former Prime Minister cites nuclear power with small modular reactors, artificial intelligence to better control energy consumption and CO2 sequestration.
