The US Environmental Protection Agency has published a rule requiring coal-fired power plants that wish to continue operating beyond 2039 to implement a system to capture 90% of their CO2 emissions by 2032 at the latest. The regulation is part of the US administration's commitment to eliminate CO2 emissions from the electricity generation sector by 2035. This is the first time that the federal government has tackled emissions from coal-fired power stations. The EPA regulation is likely to be challenged by industry and by Republican-majority states.
