The UK government has indicated that it is considering authorising the construction of new gas-fired power stations beyond 2030 in order to guarantee the UK's security of supply. The government has made it clear that this decision in no way calls into question the country's targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. Gas-fired power stations currently account for 40% of the UK's electricity supply. Current legislation requires all gas-fired power stations commissioned after 2030 to be equipped with CO2 capture systems. This legislation will be made more flexible.
