As part of its low-carbon strategy, the UK government has decided to increase its operating nuclear generation capacity to 24 GW by 2050. In practical terms, achieving this target means extending the five nuclear power stations currently in operation in the UK and building a fifth nuclear power station in addition to the four EPRs currently under construction at Hinkley Point and Sizewell. This project for a fifth power station will be launched at the same time as SMR-type mini-reactor projects, for which a call for tenders is currently underway.
