Since March, RTE has been facing network constraints that are limiting interconnection capacity with Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy. French exports reached 33.8 TWh in the first half of the year, compared with 7 TWh in 2022 and 18 TWh in 2023. Over the period 2014-2021, exports averaged less than 20 TWh. The topology of flows on the RTE network has also changed, with significant flows from the south and south-west towards Italy and from the south-west towards the border with Belgium and Germany. RTE expects tensions to rise again between August and October, due to low consumption coupled with abundant generation and large flows crossing the French network. As a result, the gap between French and German prices is very wide over the period (€30/MWh in August).
