The last coal-fired power station in operation in the UK will shut down at the end of the month
The Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station, the last coal-fired power station in operation in the United Kingdom, will shut down for good at the end of September. Coal provided 70% of electricity production in the 1980s, 38% in 2013 and 5% in 2018. The UK government has set a target of 100% decarbonised electricity by 2030. Gas-fired power stations currently account for 35% of electricity production across the Channel, on a par with renewable energies such as solar and wind power. The remainder is provided equally by nuclear and bioenergy.
