The Italian government wants to revive nuclear power generation. In its climate and energy plan submitted to the European Commission, the Italian government has set a target of 11% nuclear power generation by 2050. Italy is the only G7 country without a nuclear reactor in operation. The last nuclear power station in operation closed in 1990 following a referendum held in 1987 after the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
