The inclusion of fuels in the EU ETS could increase the price of diesel by 50 euro cents by 2031. From 2027, fuel suppliers will have to buy certificates to cover their customers' emissions. The extra cost will most likely be passed on in sales prices. The extra cost will be 14 cents in 2027 when the new system is introduced, rising to 50 cents four years later. In 2022, the European Commission has created a new compartment within the EU ETS covering heating and transport. This new compartment will not offer any free allowances.
