The government abandons the submarine cable project between Morocco and England
The British government has decided to abandon the interconnection project between Morocco and England. The project, developed by XLinks and supported by TotalEnergies and Octopus Energy, aimed to develop wind and solar power capacity in southern Morocco and transport the electricity generated to England via an underwater cable. The cost of the project was estimated at £24 billion. The planned production capacity (7 GW of solar and 3.5 GW of wind) would have covered around 8% of the UK's electricity demand. The British government considered that the project presented too many risks, in particular that the vulnerability of the submarine power link to attacks from third countries could jeopardise the UK's security of supply.
