The European Union is going to ban imports of Russian gas

The European Commission, the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament have agreed on the date for terminating long-term Russian gas purchase contracts. These contracts will be terminated on 30 September 2027, with Member States experiencing difficulties in replenishing their gas stocks having the option of extending these contracts until 30 November on an exceptional basis.
The ban on Russian gas imports will thus be implemented in three stages:

  • Short-term contracts will be terminated from 25 April 2026 for LNG and from 17 June 2026 for land-based gas;
  • Long-term LNG contracts will be terminated from 1 January 2027;
  • Long-term contracts for land-based gas will be terminated by 30 September 2027 at the latest (or, by way of derogation, 30 November 2027).
