The European Commission wants to integrate the European and British carbon markets
Following Brexit, the European and British carbon markets were separated. Since 1 January 2021, the United Kingdom has had its own market. The two markets have many similarities, but differences have emerged, such as the inclusion of maritime transport emissions in the European emissions trading system. Integrating the two markets would make it possible to reduce CO2 emissions more effectively and simplify trade between the European Union and the United Kingdom by avoiding the need to deal with potential carbon leakage in trade between Europe and England.
The European Commission has decided to open negotiations with the United Kingdom with a view to preparing for the integration of the two markets.
