The European Commission wants to ban all Russian gas imports by 2027.
According to the Commission, the European Union will have imported 20 bcm of Russian gas by ship (LNG) and 32 bcm by pipeline in 2024. Russian gas imports would thus have increased in 2024 compared to 2023, from 43 to 52 bcm.
According to the Commission, two-thirds of gas imported from Russia is under long-term contracts, with the remaining third under short-term contracts (trading).
The ban would be phased in:

  • Ban on signing new contracts from the end of the year;
  • Creation of a legal framework allowing existing short-term contracts to be terminated at the end of the year;
  • Creation of a legal framework allowing existing long-term contracts to be terminated by the end of 2027 at the latest.

The implementation proposals are expected to be unveiled shortly.
