The Court of Auditors is concerned about the cost of support for the sector to public finances
The cost of purchase tariffs to public finances reached 1.1 billion euros in 2024, after 800 million euros in 2023. In view of the development of the sector, the Court of Auditors estimates that the cost of feed-in tariffs to the public purse could reach between 22 and 27 billion euros over the next 12 years. Biogas production reached 12 TWh in 2023. However, the multi-annual energy plan forecasts a production of 50 TWh in 2030. The Court of Auditors is also cautious about the biomethane production certificate (CPB) mechanism, which is to take over from feed-in tariffs. For the Court of Auditors, this mechanism merely transfers the burden of state aid to gas consumers, and the proper functioning of this market is not guaranteed.
