The European Council and Parliament have reached an agreement to simplify the carbon border adjustment mechanism. Their proposal, which is very similar to that of the Commission, will allow imports of products covered by the CBAM (hydrogen, electricity, fertilisers, aluminium, cement, iron and steel) of less than 50 tonnes to escape the mechanism, while ensuring that 99% of import-related emissions are covered.
