The Commission wants to exempt 80% of businesses from carbon tax at borders
As part of the plan to simplify European regulations, the European Commission is considering exempting 80% of businesses from the EU carbon tax. From 2026, the border carbon adjustment mechanism will oblige European companies that import steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen or electricity manufactured outside Europe to pay compensation for the emissions resulting from the manufacture of these products. The concentration of emissions (20% of companies are responsible for 95% of emissions) has led the Commission to focus on large emitters and exempt small emitters from the mechanism.
