The European Commission today proposed an amendment to European climate law setting a climate target for the European Union to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to 1990 levels.
To achieve this target, the Commission will allow Member States to use international carbon credits to a limited extent. The Commission is also considering allowing the use of permanent domestic removals in the emissions trading system and allowing greater flexibility between sectors subject to quotas. The European Union is currently on track to achieve its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.
