The Academy of Sciences takes a critical view of the PPE
The Academy of Sciences supports the stated ambition of nuclear power production (360-400 TWh) covering a substantial share of France's electricity needs. However, it regrets that the targets for the electricity mix do not take into account the weakness of electricity demand, which fell from 480 TWh in 2017 to 449 TWh in 2024. The Academy of Sciences considers it unlikely that there will be a sharp acceleration in electrification of uses and regrets the targets set by the PPE for renewable energies (254-274 TWh for wind and solar power in 2035), which it disputes and for which it calls for an assessment of the full economic cost, including the cost of intermittency and the cost of developing and adapting networks.
