Sweden, which built twelve reactors in the 1970s and 1980s, abandoned nuclear power following the Three Mile Island accident in the United States in 1979. Six reactors are currently in operation. Vattenfall, the state-owned electricity company, is set to revive nuclear power by developing small reactors to be installed in the south of the country at the Ringhals nuclear power plant. Vattenfall will choose between two SMR (small modular reactor) technologies: GE Vernova (USA) or Rolls Royce (UK). The reactors (1,500 MW in total) are expected to come online in 2035.
