SunCable to develop giant solar project in northern Australia
The Australian government has given the go-ahead for the Australia-Asia Power project, a large-scale solar photovoltaic project being developed by SunCable. SunCable will install solar panels on 12,000 hectares of arid pastureland in northern Australia, build an 800-kilometre extra-high-voltage line to the port city of Darwin and then install a 4,300-kilometre undersea cable to carry the electricity to Singapore. The installed capacity will be around 6 GW. 4 GW will be used for the Darwin metropolitan area and 2 GW will be exported to Singapore, covering 15% of the country's electricity needs. The solar farm will be equipped with batteries and complemented by a wind farm to provide electricity 24 hours a day. The estimated cost of the project is €21.1 billion.
