Some European states want to re-import gas from Russia if the war with Ukraine ends
Some European Union member states are considering offering to buy gas from Russia as part of a negotiated peace with Ukraine. This proposal could tip the balance by giving Russia guarantees and opening up prospects if the war is brought to an end. These countries also want to re-import Russian gas to bring down energy prices in Europe and boost the European economy. The Eastern European countries and the European Commission are opposed to the idea. Moreover, it is not clear that the United States would welcome a resumption of Russian gas exports to Europe, which would immediately reduce European demand for American LNG. For the time being, the European Commission is aiming for a total and definitive halt to European purchases of Russian gas by 2027.
