RTE publishes its provisional balance sheet for 2025-2035
RTE has published the 2025 edition of its forecast balance sheet, which covers the years 2025-2035.
RTE has revised its electricity consumption forecast downwards compared to the 2023 forecast. The update to the electricity demand growth trajectory is motivated by the deterioration in the macroeconomic environment and the (lasting) consequences of the 2022-2023 energy crisis (permanent declines in consumption).
According to the scenarios studied, electricity consumption will rise from 470 TWh in 2025 to 580 TWh in 2035 in the "rapid decarbonisation" scenario and to 505 TWh in the "slow decarbonisation" scenario.
For RTE, the challenge for the next ten years is no longer to increase low-carbon electricity production "whatever the cost", but to optimise the costs of the electricity system by extending the life of existing nuclear power plants and developing solar and wind farms in areas where conditions are favourable.
Finally, RTE notes that electricity consumption is not currently in line with France's decarbonisation targets.
