Renewables set to account for 37% of total power generation in 2026

Electricity generated from renewable sources should rise by 8% this year, according to the International Energy Agency. The share of renewables in global power generation would climb from 33% in 2025 to 37% in 2026. Despite that progress, CO2 emissions from the power generation sector would still increase by 1% in 2026, as higher gas prices push some producers to favour coal over less-emitting gas. Global electricity demand is expected to grow by 3.6% in 2026. India is the country where demand should rise fastest (7%). Demand growth in the European Union should reach 2.1%.
