2024 was the hottest year on record in Europe, according to the European Climate Report published on April 15 by Copernicus, the European Union's climate monitoring program. Europe is thus the first continent to exceed the 1.5 degree temperature increase set by the Paris Agreement. The report indicates that solar photovoltaic electricity production was significantly below average potential production in 2024, describing 2024 as a dark year with below-average solar radiation levels.
The fall of 2024 was also marked in Western Europe by a marked weakness in wind resources, which were 75% below average.
