Parliament lifts the ban on building new nuclear power plants

The National Council has lifted the ban on building new nuclear power plants in Switzerland. The vote comes as part of a broader push to revive nuclear power. While the Council stopped short of voting in favour of actually building new plants, it did lift the ban on constructing them. The ban dates back to 2017. The nuclear debate is set to continue over the question of how plant construction would be financed, a precondition for restarting Switzerland's nuclear sector. Switzerland currently has three operating nuclear plants — Beznau, Gösgen and Leibstadt — with a total installed capacity of around 3,000 MW.
