NATO steps up surveillance of critical infrastructures

NATO has set up a specialised unit to protect critical infrastructure, such as gas pipelines and submarine cables. These infrastructures are not currently monitored and are prime targets. In 2022, a gas pipeline was damaged in the Baltic Sea, highlighting the vulnerability of key infrastructure for Europe's energy supply. Fighter ships, aircraft and drones will patrol continuously in the vicinity of these infrastructures to deter any acts of sabotage.
