Microsoft to invest 1.6 billion dollars in the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant
Microsoft is to invest 1.6 billion dollars to restart production at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. To this end, Microsoft has signed a twenty-year power purchase agreement with the Constellation electricity company. Located in Pennsylvania, the plant was the scene of a major nuclear accident that led to the core meltdown of one of its reactors in March 1978. The restart of the plant is subject to the approval of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Microsoft announced at the beginning of the year that its CO2 emissions had increased by 33% compared to their 2020 level. The group is seeking to reduce its emissions at a time when it is developing very large data centres to provide services in the field of artificial intelligence.
