Italy's last two coal-fired plants set to close before year-end

Italy's last two coal-fired power stations — Civitavecchia (1,860 MW) and Brindisi (1,820 MW) — are expected to shut down before the end of the year. The closures were originally scheduled for early 2026, but the government stalled in late February as war broke out between Iran, Israel and the United States. Rome now argues that the build-out of renewable and gas-fired capacity allows Italy to do without the two plants, which would have generated only 10 to 12 TWh a year.
