Ireland asks data centres to contribute to security of supply
Ireland currently has 80 large data centres, most of which are located around Dublin. These data centres account for 20% of the country's electricity consumption. In 2021, the government had to impose a moratorium to avoid a shortage of electricity. While it says it is prepared to lift the moratorium, the Irish government wants to require operators to contribute to the development of renewable energies and the grid so as not to undermine the country's security of supply.
