Investment in new gas-fired power plants is rising sharply
Rising electricity demand in the United States, falling gas prices and the energy transition in emerging countries are driving a sharp increase in investment in gas-fired power plants. In the United States, the US Department of Energy forecasts an average increase in capacity of 19 GW per year over the period 2025-2030, compared with 9 GW over the period 2010-2024. Installed capacity is growing strongly in the Middle East (+10% per year in Saudi Arabia), China (+7% per year) and India (+6% per year).
In Europe, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands are planning to develop new gas-fired power plants. France is not ruling this out if demand increases.
