Installed renewable capacity to grow by 45,000 MW in 2026

Despite the US administration's openly hostile stance, wind and solar generating capacity in the United States will increase by 45,000 MW in 2026. Higher fossil fuel prices and rising demand, driven in particular by the development of AI, are supporting investment in renewables, while investors are also keen to secure the tax credits still available this year. US electricity consumption is expected to rise by 39% by 2035. Solar and wind assets are developed relatively quickly in the United States — less than two years on average, compared with at least three years for gas-fired power plant projects.
