Hydropower production declines due to drought
The drought affecting England and Wales is impacting hydropower production, which fell by 40% in the second quarter. This is the worst drought the United Kingdom has experienced in several decades. The electricity company Scottish and Southern Energy saw its hydroelectric production fall from 653 GWh to 393 GWh between the first and second quarters. The 8% increase in wind power production, to 2,096 GWh, was not enough to offset the lower output from hydroelectric plants.
