Hydroelectric production should be lower in 2025 than in 2024

Hydroelectric generation fell by 17.8% in the first half of the year compared with the first half of 2024. This trend is set to continue in the second half of the year, due to lower rainfall. In 2024, with record rainfall, hydroelectric production was 28% higher than in 2023. EDF, which manages 80% of the hydropower fleet, saw its production fall by 5.2 TWh in 2025 compared with 2024, to 26 TWh. For EDF, this represents a return to normal after an exceptional year in 2024. Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR) has a more severe view of the situation. The flow of the Rhône this year was one of the lowest recorded since the 1920s.
