Heatwave could force EDF to curb its nuclear output

In a statement, EDF said that forecasts of high water temperatures in the Rhône and the Garonne meant output restrictions were likely to hit its nuclear fleet.

During heatwaves, rising river temperatures can force EDF to scale back or even halt production to avoid heating the waterways further.

Plant operations are in fact governed by limits on how much they may warm rivers, set to protect wildlife and plant life.

Two plants were particularly affected: Bugey, in the Ain department, and Saint-Alban, in the Isère department.

Electricity prices for next week in France topped EUR 100/MWh at Thursday evening's close.
