The growth in oil and coal consumption decreased in 2024. As a result, the increase in oil and coal-related emissions slowed last year: coal-related emissions increased by 0.9% in 2024 compared to 2% in 2023 and oil-related emissions increased by 0.3% in 2024 compared to 0.9% in 2023. Heatwaves have weighed heavily on the growth of emissions: the International Energy Agency estimates that episodes of very high heat were responsible for half of the increase in carbon emissions in 2024.
