Global energy demand increased by 2.2% in 2024 according to the International Energy Agency. Demand growth is lower than global growth (3.2%) but higher than the average growth in energy demand over the past ten years (1.3%).
China's energy demand reached 2.9% last year, compared with 4.9% in India, 1.7% in the United States and 0.5% in Europe.
Electricity demand increased by 4.3%, driven by the electrification of uses, compared with 2.7% for gas demand. Coal consumption continues to grow, albeit at a reduced rate (1.1%), as does the demand for oil (0.8% in 2024 compared to 1.9% in 2023).
Renewable energies covered 40% of the world's electricity needs in 2024.
