Global coal consumption declined by 0.6% in 2025

According to a report published by Global Energy Monitor, global coal consumption declined by 0.6% in 2025, after reaching a record level that year (8.85 billion tonnes). However, the number of coal-fired power plants increased (+3.5%), driven by new capacity additions in China and India, which account for 95% of global commissioning. Coal plant closures also slowed worldwide in 2025. Coal-fired power generation increased last year in the United States by 80 TWh.
