French electricity generation returns to pre-Covid 19 levels
According to RTE, French electricity generation reached 536.5 TWh in 2024, returning to its 2019 level. This increase is directly linked to the rise in nuclear generation, which was 40 TWh higher in 2024 than in 2023. EDF's nuclear fleet operated at an average of 67% of its capacity, below the load rates seen between 2000 and 2010 (between 70% and 77%). Electricity generation from renewable sources reached 148 TWh, including 74 TWh from hydropower. 95% of French generation is low-carbon. Thermal power stations produced only 19.9 TWh in 2024, less than photovoltaic solar power.
According to RTE, electricity consumption in France should remain 6% below the average for 2014-2019.
