France to store CO2 at sea off Denmark
France has signed a bilateral agreement with Denmark on the transport of CO2 for permanent geological storage. France does not currently authorise the geological storage of CO2 on its territory. However, it is considering storing CO2 in third countries in order to meet its target of reducing its CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. The CO2 will initially be transported to the storage sites by ship before a network of gas pipelines takes over. Capture and storage will be reserved for industries for which no technical alternative exists. Discussions with the Netherlands and Italy have begun. Denmark is developing several storage projects in the North Sea. At present, only Norway has operational CO2 storage capacity.
