According to a study by a British university published in the journal Earth System Science Data, fires are responsible for 15% of man-made greenhouse gas emissions. 3.9 million square kilometres were destroyed by fire between March 2023 and February 2024. The associated emissions represented 8.6 billion tonnes of CO2 worldwide. Particularly intense fires this year affected Canada, the Amazon, Hawaii and Greece.
