Exxon invites Europeans to sign long-term liquefied natural gas contracts

US oil company Exxon wants Europeans to sign long-term LNG purchase contracts as part of the European Union's commitment to buy $750 billion worth of US energy products by 2028. The Europeans are reluctant to commit to long-term purchases of natural gas, as such commitments would contravene the European objective of carbon neutrality by 2050. At the same time, the United States is putting pressure on Europe to stop buying Russian gas now. As Europe's leading supplier of LNG, the United States could then, under certain assumptions, supply Europe with 75% of its LNG needs.
