Existing nuclear sites could accommodate between 60 and 95 GW of new capacity
According to a study by the Department of Energy, existing and former US nuclear sites could accommodate between 60 and 95 GW of new nuclear capacity. The study reviewed 54 sites where nuclear power plants are currently operating and 11 sites where nuclear power plants have recently ceased operation. The criteria used to judge the quality of the sites were size, available surface area, site environment, water resources for cooling the reactors, proximity to populated areas, flood risk and seismic risk.
