20% of wind power generation capacity is over 15 years old. These wind turbines, installed in the 2000s, are now technologically outdated: their size, output and availability are far inferior to those of the latest generation of wind turbines. Replacing these wind turbines with more recent machines is fraught with difficulties: technical difficulties, insofar as the sites on which the first wind turbines were built are not all capable of accommodating the latest-generation turbines, which are much larger; regulatory difficulties, insofar as the regulatory framework for replacing existing structures has not yet been decided.
