Energy-related greenhouse gas emissions hit a record high in 2023
According to a report by the Energy Institute (Statistical Review of World Energy 2023), energy-related greenhouse gas emissions rose by 2% in 2023 to exceed 40 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This increase comes despite a significant rise in renewable electricity production (+13% in 2023). Fossil fuel consumption is increasing in high-growth countries such as India. It may have peaked and is in the process of declining in OECD countries. Overall, the share of fossil fuels in the energy mix remains high at 81.5%. It was 86% in 1995.
