The development of artificial intelligence and the associated data infrastructures could lead to a significant increase in demand for electricity in the United States, of the order of 25% by 2028 compared with 2023. While demand for electricity in the United States has stagnated for the past 20 years, the break in the trajectory of demand will require considerable investment in production facilities and networks. The strategies of players such as Google, Meta and Amazon, aimed at achieving carbon neutrality as soon as possible, are likely to be thwarted, as the severity of demand means that these players will have to resort to conventional means of production such as gas-fired power stations, which have the advantage of producing continuously and being able to be built quickly.
